Welcome to my second Drum Corona Week in Review! When we left off last week, Star of Indiana was in strong position in the Gold medal race, while about 10 corps were in the hunt for a medal. Further down the lineup, the competition for Semifinals was fierce, with almost 30 corps having a good chance to land in the top 25.
What Happened This Week
This past week, I wrote two blog posts featuring some of the competitors of Drum Corona International. The first, in honour of Canada Day, was about the three Canadian competitors, and the second is about the three defunct West Coast corps. If you missed them, be sure to check them out!
The week began with a big night on Sunday, with more than 30 corps competing. That night, the Blue Devils stepped up and made a statement, beating the Cavaliers and closing the gap behind Star of Indiana. They followed it up with a less impressive show on Tuesday, but have moved themselves into third place with some solid performances later in the week.
Star of Indiana remain the gold medal favourites and the Cavaliers remain the silver medal favories as they still tend to be a step ahead of the pack. However, they are in more precarious position than they were, and Star of Indiana has seen their chances for a gold medal drop from 50% to 40% this week. This isn’t becuase they’ve had bad shows, but because the Cavaliers and Blue Devils both had a good week overall.
Last week, the medal competition had 10 competitors, but a disappointing week from the Madison Scouts has cut it down to 9. Phantom Regiment is the next corps to fall out of the runninng unless they turn things around. Likewise, the race for Finals has dropped from 16 competitors to 15, following a disappointing week from Spirit of Atlanta. Mandarins are the next in line to fall out, despite having a solid season so far. The race for Semifinals is mostly unchanged, with 31 corps still having a good chance to land a top 25 spot. Genesis had a very disappointing start to the season but recovered this week.

What to Look Forward To
This week will get started on Saturday with some big shows, including a Tour of Champions event featuring the current top 3 corps, and then the St. Louis regional is on Sunday, with 23 corps in action! There are a couple shows out west those nights as well, which means the next 2 days are a great time for corps looking to turn their season around to make a move. It’s possible that the medal race, Finals race, and Semifinals race could all start to look clearer by Monday.
The rest of the week is pretty busy afterward, with most corps performing a couple more times. The western tour, featuring Santa Clara Vanguard, the Blue Knights, and the Mandarins will finally meet the midwestern and eastern tours, which means we’ll also see how corps that haven’t seen each other stack up in Oklahoma and Texas.
